Project Vision: “What makes the design and planning for the Asplundh Cancer Center unique is the client’s vision of a healing environment for cancer patients that also helps heal the building site itself. The notion of healing within a natural environment drove the design of the project. More than just locating an isolated healing garden, the client’s vision capitalized on the opportunity to reconnect the building inhabitants to an ecologically restored and vibrant landscape. Peg O’Grady, Asplundh Cancer Pavilion’s administrative director, Oncology at Abington-Jefferson Health stated, “Our design team did an incredible job bringing the outdoors into the Pavilion with abundant natural light, birch and moss design elements, and views of the surrounding greenery. Research shows that the environment has an effect on the burden of disease and healing times, so we were sure to make each choice thoughtfully. The design team interviewed patients and their family members and engaged the Patient and Family Advisory Council as a sounding board.”
Other Details: The project showcases how architecture and development can be regenerative for people through a healing structure and regenerative for the planet through site development.
