|What are…||Bark House® Poplar Bark Siding and Wall Tiles are manufactured from the peeled bark of Tulip Poplar Trees. The bark, which is historically a waste product in lumber operations, is harvested to become siding and wall tiles before the logs reach the mill. The bark is squared, kiln dried, and the quality is checked to ensure a top-shelf siding product.||Bark House® Poplar Panels are large full cylinders of bark unrolled from the full length of a single log. Great care must be used when cutting, removing, and transporting the raw sheet. They are quickly cleaned, flattened, sterilized, dried and squared. These are rare, and incredibly unique pieces of bark.||Bark House® Subway Tile Panels are monolithic panels that are inspired by a traditional subway tile layout. Interior Grade Poplar Bark is used in your design. The diversity of the individual pieces varying in color and texture blend together to form a warm geometric pattern that is so pleasing to sight and touch. Seams between each piece of bark will be seen on each panel and between individual panels. The seams between panels may be celebrated with various trim options you supply or it is possible to create a “keyed effect” so that seams between panels disappear. You can also choose the dimension of your tiles to be laminated.|

Poplar bark is the perfect material for every design style. The muted tones juxtapose in commercial environments to add a natural element; they blend with natural hues in a home environment; and they add a focal point to bring multitude of surfaces into context. From modern to rustic design and beyond, Bark House has your walls covered!
Grades are a function of thickness. They are either thin, medium or thick. For exterior applications, only Standard and Premium grades should be considered.
Shingles: This flagship poplar bark shingle siding is definitely designed for maintenance-free exterior applications! You can also use them as interior wall tiles that are lapped or butted together.
Panels: Bark House® Poplar Panels can be used in an exterior application if they are laminated to an exterior-grade substrate. This is a custom fabrication process, so please reach out to [email protected] or (828) 765-9010 to learn more. This product creates a strong focal point to bring nature inside, as well!
Subway Tile Panels: No, Bark House® Subway Tile Panels are made with interior grade poplar bark and are meant for interior applications only.
The only difference between Standard and Premium Grade Shingles is the thickness of the bark. There is no significant difference in shingle performance, except in the most extreme environments. The Premium Grade offers deeper ridges in the bark texture. For most applications, this simply becomes a character and aesthetic preference.
These products are derived from natural material, so no two will be the same. If you have been inspired by a photo, let us know, and we will do our best to help you achieve a similar look.
Shingles: Shingles are available in 13”, 18”, and 26” heights. The widths of our shingles – all heights – are random and will range from 6” to 48”. The thickness of the shingle depends on the Grade. Interior: 3/8” to ½”; Standard: 9/16” to 7/8”; Premium: 15/16” to 1 ½”.
Panels: We standardize the heights of our panels, but the widths are random sizes. Because of the rarity of these panels, we try to maximize the size of each one that is harvested. Panel heights will be in one-foot increments from 6-12 feet. Widths will range from 24” to 96”. The thickness of the panel depends on the Grade. Interior: 3/8” to ½”; Standard: 9/16” to 7/8”; Premium: 15/16” to 1 ½”.
Subway Tile Panels: Since this is a customer order, the dimensions are created to your specifications to a maximum size of 5′ x 12′.
Because these products are made from natural materials, we are unable to offer a warranty on them. If you have concerns about their durability in a certain application, please reach out to [email protected].
Poplar products have been tested to be a ASTM E-84-05 Class B Flame and Smoke Spread Rated, and a detailed report is available upon request.
Laminated products are subject to the substrate that is used.
Yes! Each Product Page has a “Product Options” section which walks you through the available customization for that product (an additional fee may apply).
We work with architects and designers all over to create unique product applications that have contributed to award winning designs. We welcome the opportunity to do so with you.
Shingles: Once you install Bark House Poplar Shingles on the exterior of your building, you can expect the bark to take on characteristics of your environment. The sun, wind, and rain will allow the bark to become uniquely yours. To learn more about the aging of poplar bark shingles, see this link: The Natural Aging of Bark House® Shingles.
Panels: Each panel is a unique part of an individual tree. The nature of the product ensures that no two are alike. You can browse our current inventory here to find the panels that will be best suited for your project.
Subway Tile Panels: No two pieces of harvested bark are the same, which means that no two of our products will ever be exactly the same. Bark House® Laminate Wall Coverings and Panels are hand crafted with materials that meet our rigorous selection standards. From the start of manufacturing to the final installation, you can be sure that the product is made specifically for you.
Yes! We have 6″ x 6″ sample tiles that you can easily order via our website page, Sample Kits. Bark House samples are not discards, cut-offs, or scrap. They are hand-crafted just like full-sized products. The RAW™ (Reclaimed Appalachian Wood Waste) material we procure is not a commodity. When you feel the raw material of these products, we know that you are going to love the texture. No other wall covering compares.
Shingles: This is not required, and generally not preferred. However, if your project calls for it, we can can epoxy laminate the individual shingles to 1/4″ plywood or 1/2″ MDF.
Panels: This is not required for most applications, but we do have laminated options available. Poplar Panels can be epoxy laminated to ½” or greater MDF substrate to simplify your installation. Lamination will add rigidity to your panel, and we can laminate sizes up to 5’ x 12’.
Subway Tile Panels: Subway Tile Panels are required to be laminated to 1/2″ MDF.
Shingles: Poplar Bark Shingles have squared or straight edges, but we also offer a hand-chopped edge for a more rustic presentation. Our craftsmen create this look of antiquity by using broad hatchets to chop the bottom edge of the shingle.
Panels: Panels have four straight edges. Allow for a 1/4” diagonal tolerance. If your installation requires perfectly squared panels, you should be prepared for onsite trimming for fit. We generally leave them a half inch greater than listed in height and width to give room for adjustment.
Subway Tile Panels: Subway Tile Panels have two edge options: Straight and Keyed. Our Keyed edge consists of staggered rows interlocking from panel to panel to hide the seam. This is generally a random staggered edge so that when one panel is mated to the next, it will produce the illusion of one single sheet across the full span of your wall.
Shingles: We can make basic cuts on your shingles for a small fee before it is shipped to you . If you need to cut them yourself, use the same techniques that you would normally use for finish-cutting any other wood shingles.

Subway Tile Panels: This product is built to fit your specifications.
Finishes can be applied to poplar bark products if you choose, and are priced by the total square footage. Surface planing and sanding as well as a diverse group of finishes are available for these products. Custom work is also possible. A fire-retardant application is available as well. We are happy to assist you in determining if any of these options are right or necessary for your project.
Bark is a porous material like wood. Like the differing patterns of wood grain, the porosity of bark occurs in differencing degrees and in differing patterns. When finishes are applied to the material, the inherent color underneath will be amplified, and the degree of saturation in each area across the face of the bark will vary. Therefore, the finish on your Bark House sample (a unique piece) is not guaranteed to match 100% to the finish on your larger bark wall covering (of which no two are exactly alike). Our finished samples and wall coverings are sprayed consistently over the face of the material. If your project requires exact matches, then we will educate your finish expert about the nature of the material they are working with. Your professional finisher should work with you onsite for a perfect match. If your project has an allowance for slight variations then, our finishers are highly experienced and glad to be of service.
If you have been inspired by a design that we’ve done in the past, we can use that as a reference for your custom project. While it will not be exactly the same, we can use our previous work as a guide for your vision.
We are no strangers to high levels of customization and unique installations. If you’re wondering if it can be done, it probably can be. Reach out to our expert staff to discuss the details of your project!

Panels: Panels should be installed using a combination of panel adhesive and mechanical fasteners. Z-clips and other panel hanging techniques may also be used if the panels are laminated to a substrate. Please read our Installation Guide for detailed information.
Subway Tile Panels: As with all of our products, we provide a detailed Installation Guide.
Shingles: We don’t consider rain screens necessary because of the design of the installed shingles. The purpose of the screen is to ventilate between the substrate and the siding to mitigate moisture build-up that can occur with siding types nailed flat to the wall. Because the shingles and its felt backing are layered at an angle up the wall, there is already a space created between them and the substrate. Further, the shingles are convoluted on the face so this creates pockets of airflow at the lap line. A rain screen is actually an aspect of the natural design.
Panels: A rain screen may be effective with this product application. Consult your local building inspections office, engineer or designer to see if this is necessary or preferred in your area.
Subway Tile Panels: Not applicable; this is an interior-use product.
Shingles: On an exterior application, the product can last 80 years, maintenance free. Because Bark House created the manufacturing process for bark shingles only thirty years ago, you may wonder on what evidence an eighty-year estimate is based. Historic Chestnut bark shingles have lasted well over a hundred years. A newer version, the poplar bark shingle was used historically as well. Not manufactured to today’s strict Bark House specifications, company co-founders identified five local residences with poplar shingles before we began our manufacturing process. That siding lasted in excess of 80-years in a harsh four-season environment.
Panels: On an exterior application, the product can last 80 years, maintenance free. Interior applications can last indefinitely.
Subway Tile Panels: Interior applications can last indefinitely.
Shingles: Our Poplar Bark Shingles require no maintenance over the life of the product. The natural toughness of the bark makes it a great economical siding option for your building. By removing the need for regular maintenance, installing poplar bark shingles saves you time and money over the lifetime of your structure.

Subway Tile Panels: This is an interior-use product; see next question, “How do I clean interior bark?”
Interior wall tiles can be dusted or vacuumed like any other wall covering, but be careful with the mosses and lichens!
Yes, they are very insect resistant. White Paper: Insect Resistance
Because it is a natural product, poplar bark shingles will develop natural aging qualities over time. Please see our page about the natural aging of bark.
Shingles: This is a sturdy, resilient material that can stand up to hands touching it and common usage. If you want to preserve lichens or moss on the face, then handle it with care.
Panels: You should use great care when unloading your panels upon delivery. While they are sturdy, rough or unbalanced handling can damage the panels. It is important to have at least two people to handle a panel. We repair major stress fractures with mesh tape and epoxy before making available for sale, but smaller superficial surface cracks may still exist on the backside of the panels.

The minimum diameter cylinder that a standard grade poplar bark panel is recommended to wrap is 16”.
Shingles: Yes; Your professional installer can curve Poplar Bark Shingles around a column with kerfing.
Panels: Yes. This is accomplished by your professional installer kerfing the back of the panel on the job site. The minimum width panel required to accomplish this is 52”, or the column diameter multiplied by π/pi (3.1416).
Subway Tile Panels: No; Subway Tile Panels are not able to curve around a column due to the nature of the product.
Exterior: Why not cover your home with what Mother Nature covers her trees? It’s so logical to use our bark shingles to protect your home given that is a natural UV, fire, water, and insect resistant covering for the wood underneath. Fire-resistant capability data is available by request.
Rest assured that over time your investment remains solid. There are old poplar bark-sided structures we visit and monitor that are still going after 80 years! On top of that, none of those old shingles would pass our stringent grading and processing procedures today made necessary with modern building code standards.
Interior: Our durable laminate wall coverings offer a natural beauty in an indoor space that other wall covering solutions cannot match. These Bark House products break the mold of traditional building practices by giving you a unique design that is created just for you. Once installed, our panels require no maintenance. If you want to dust or vacuum them, just be mindful of the mosses and lichens!
Bark House® is the original manufacturer of bark wall coverings, designed to connect people to nature in the built environment. Our products elicit thinking about the potential of nature and memories of past time spent in the forest with loved ones. This includes walks with grandparents as children when all was safe and anything was possible. We believe that people care for what they care about, and placing the regenerative bark of trees where people spend 90% of their time, will nurture a connection with forests. Reconnecting to natural systems is an important first step toward human health, climate remediation.
As the first manufacturer of bark wall coverings, we know that nature has inspired great works of Architecture in every country for thousands of years. People yearn for a connection with nature in their living environments. We deliver this in its purest form through beautiful products. Importantly, we discovered that the patterns in nature can also teach us about a better business process: one (like nature) that is flexible and capable of responding to all types of changing conditions. Many businesses are built on the idea of keeping things simple, but we follow a methodology that allows us to keep an eye on the whole-process and see what’s developing on the horizon, in the valleys and across the plain. We have worked hard to anticipate your every need and have an option ready to support your goals. We invite every stakeholder including vendors, employees and clients to learn more about the system that yields products and process that are awarded world-wide.
Shingles: One of the greatest benefits for using Bark House Shingles is the cost savings from not having to paint or stain. Our shingles are comparably priced to other premium wood sidings that also have to be painted or stained. Given that this painted or stained wood needs to be re-coated every three to five years at a current range of $2 to $5 per square foot depending on the wood’s condition, just your maintenance costs alone can exceed the cost of our shingles in just 10 years.
Our bark grading process ensures that thicknesses are consistent and perfectly square. These measures allow for rapid on-site installation which save you time and money.

The maintenance free laminates will last indefinitely, leaving you to do nothing but enjoy the natural beauty that they add to your building. Your investment in our wall coverings is an investment in the well-being of our planet, and the health of your interior space.
Shingles: Shingles are graded by thickness and are priced by the square foot.
Panels: Each Bark House® Poplar Panel is a unique piece that tells the story of a specific tree. These panels may show evidence of limb scars, vine marks, bird peck, or other natural features. The texture of the bark will vary, as well as the amount of mosses and lichens present. Our pricing will differ based on a panel’s grade, dimensions, and unique features. Please reach out to [email protected] or (828) 765-9010 for pricing information.
Subway Tile Panels: Our 3D Wall Panels are priced by the square foot. The price will depend on the type of material used and any finishes that you wish to add. Keyed edges are priced by the linear foot and finish options are priced by the square foot.
Shingles: Bark House Poplar Shingles are shipped securely banded on pallets. It is important to keep the shingles under pressure while being stored. When stored without pressure, the bark may naturally attempt to warp. If you do not plan to immediately install the shingles, store the shingles in a protected environment and do not clip the tension bands.
Panels: These panels are shipped laid flat on a crated pallet. We are able to stack multiple panels for a shipment, and they will be protected with a layer of foam between each piece.

Our products are shipped in the most economical way possible for the size of your order. Most shipments will be done via Less Than Truckload (LTL) freight, and the cost will depend on your order size and shipping location. We are happy to provide you with a quote.
Shingles: Most of our distributors do offer trade discounts. We are also able to offer a discount on Poplar Bark Shingle orders over 1000 square feet.
Panels: We are unable to offer volume discounts on poplar panels due to the rarity of the product, but many of our distributors do offer trade discounts.
Subway Tile Panels: Bark House® Laminate Wall Coverings and Panels are custom fabricated for each individual client. We are unable to offer discounts on these products due to the level of craftsmanship that is required for every order.
Shingles: Our minimum order is 24 square feet, regardless of Grade or Height. If you are looking for very small quantities, we do have 6″ x 6″ sample tiles that you can easily order via our page, Sample Kits.
Panels: One panel. Size is dependent on the panel that you choose.
Subway Tile Panels: One panel. Size is dependent on the substrate that you choose.

Panels: Because these are harvested from individual trees, there is only one of each panel that you see in our inventory catalog. No two panels are ever the same as they are all unique entities. You may find panels with similar characteristics if its your goal to make multiple units match up in color and texture. Details and photos of each panel can be viewed on our online catalog.
Subway Tile Panels: No two panels will ever be identical because of the individual trees. However, because this panel is made up of smaller tiles, the aesthetic is different and the same all at once.
Shingles: The harvest and manufacturing of bark siding is seasonal. Therefore it is important that you contact our sales team and communicate your plan to use bark siding or interior wall tiles. It is possible that the product will sell out, in a given year. We will notify you if we begin to see inventory levels drop so you can meet your project timeline. Take a look at the bark harvesting process.
Panels: Poplar bark is harvested during a narrow window each year between May and July. Our availability will depend on the time of year and the size of that year’s harvest. We stock panels each year during the bark harvesting season. If you see a panel in our catalog, then it is available in our warehouse and for sale.
Subway Tile Panels: Each panel is custom ordered and is on a crafted-timeline that your team will be informed of. Our sales team can discuss lead times with you. We do have an expedited option if your timeline is tight. We can also send photos of the products in process to share with your clients!
Shingles: The production of bark shingles has a limited annual harvest season. We manage these limitations when clients inform us about their project plans. Once seasonal production begins, we rapidly process pre-orders. It is not, however, unusual that we will sell out of product at the end of the year, just before our harvest season begins anew. Share your timelines with us and we can advise you about securing product for your project.

“When a practitioner of Regenerative Development works in a project or community, the result should be increasing ableness for that community. People should become better able to evolve and pursue the aspirations they hold for healthy and meaningful lives. Water and air should be increasingly able to maintain their quality, and forests to support enlarged diversity of life. These are the indicators that real value has been delivered to stakeholders.” www.Regenerat.es
The single skilled craftsman encompassed the earliest form of making products. Training was personal and the tradesmen took pride in their work and the benefits it produced. A post-industrial world saw the use of machinery, increased scale and a trend toward practices that were Extractive to people and planet. Recognizing a need for change and making a choice to do better, manufacturers improved their processes and identified themselves as “GREEN companies”. With an aim to do “less bad”, and quantify what better should look like with agreed measurements, companies were certified through third-party groups as SUSTAINABLE. Companies with a REGENERATIVE aim were either founded with this mission, or made conscious choices to work to create new and fitting potential for the places they operate and the sectors they disrupt. Regenerative design opens a new level of exploration. It begins a process of wholistic, collaborative development. This occurs in tandem with the natural world and the inhabitants of the places they work.
“What if consumers became healers of the world?” – Chris McCurry speaks on environmental issues at the Leadership NC Conference in Asheville.
We offer a thirty-year track record with over 250 well placed publications sharing our regenerative philosophy that is now and has always been the core-business for this company. The co-founders designed the original products and processes, inspired by nature. The products you purchase reach their highest achievement when supporting your regenerative projects. Bark House sources only Reclaimed Appalachian Wood Waste, (RAW™) from small 10-acre tracts owned and stewarded by local families over generations.
The Bark House manufacturing facility is located within the five states across the Appalachian region in which our raw materials are sourced. The co-founders were born here and understanding “Appalachia” as a place has been their life’s work. Because this is our neighborhood, we take our impacts very personally. The proximity means that our neighbors can let us know what we’re doing well and where we need to improve. The benefits we are most proud of is helping to keep family farms intact and providing right-fit, nature-based jobs in this economically distressed area. The legacy of US Forestry practices began in our back yard. We aim to honor the philosophy of those practices by exceeding them.
Whether select (most often) or clear-cutting, smaller tracts sparsely spaced throughout many Appalachian states means that the impact of harvesting is less disruptive to the living eco-system. Loggers provide materials from forty-five counties across five Appalachian states.
Smaller 2-3 person crews with lighter equipment disturbs the soil less, so regrowth occurs faster. Carefully felling and removing trees and following Forestry Best Management Practices protects the trees from scarring and invaders. These practices are less disruptive to the living eco-system.
You can read about all our engagements over thirty years in real-time accounts published in the EmBark Blog and over 250 acclaimed publications. Right now, we are working to support a Regenerative Source Guild of the Blue Ridge.
Solar panels replace our electricity as one important component in the total carbon equation to manufacture a low carbon product.
High efficiency kilns designed by co-founder Marty McCurry exclusively for the complex process of drying bark are the first and only kilns of their kind. They received the NC Governor’s Green Innovation Award and are one important component in the total carbon equation to manufacture a low carbon product.
Bark House veneer wall coverings may qualify for LEED points based on locally or regionally sourced product.
At a minimum, 50% of annual company income is invested directly in to the local community. As a comparison, big box stores invest 12% in the local communities where they operate. Products are 100% sourced and made in the Appalachians. We purchase wood-waste products from land owners that are not acceptable in the standardized industry because of figure, curl or massive size. Employees are paid a living wage as a starting point. Importantly, a new income stream for this economically challenged area means that family farms can remain intact.
Bark House supports cultural diversity, equity and inclusion. These attributes can be traced in Appalachian culture before European settlement began and as it occurred. Cultural diversity is inspired by the region’s vast bio-diversity of flora and fauna. One thing this culture of independent people agree on is an appreciation for nature. Bark House work supports people to retain this close relationship with nature. Our volunteer work and community contributions center on further developing this relationship.
Bark House believes in shared prosperity and we can back up our claim of social benefits with the certifications and awards that we’ve received:
Bark House views the development of a relationship that honors nature as critically important, especially in view of a disrupted climate. Our wall coverings go into the space where people spend most of their time (indoors) and provide a gentle invitation to remember those healing, invigorating moments outdoors – in a forest.
Projects with Bark House products have been featured in over 250 well-positioned media outlets as well as being featured in our blog. We want to celebrate the benefits your project is creating for people or the environment.
