The Bark House slab and mantel collection focuses on Appalachian species that were felled by the wind as well as hearty sections of diseased trees. These are most often “yard trees” that, without the normal forest competition, tend to have thick stocky trunks. We only accept the older and most gnarled or figured wood as they best tell the story of the tree’s struggles to survive.
Sold Regionally And By The Truckload
The mass and weight of these huge slabs of wood make them a good option for regional buyers who can pick them up at our shop. Shipping LTL can cost more than the slab itself. Therefore, we only ship this product by the truckload. We’ll gladly load your shipper at our shop as well.

Shapes
Each Live Edge Wood Slab is individually crafted based on the tree it came from. We offer a variety of shapes to provide you with the perfect desk, table, mantel, or wherever your creativity can take you.
These trees speak through the grain of their wood. Technical terminology for characteristics such as Curly, Spalted, Quilted, Wormy, and Burly are simple labels for extremely complex growth and figure resulting from a myriad of stresses and injuries that the tree has endured. This figure can be difficult to see in a rough board for the untrained eye, but once our raw wood slabs have been finished you will be captivated by the depth and movement as the grain tells the story of its life.
Our sawing technique called “slabbing” means that once we choose the direction to slice, we make repeated parallel cuts until all boards are freed. We don’t cut the bark edges off as to leave the natural “live edge” intact. After a period of air drying to relieve the boards of excess moisture, we finish dry and sterilize them in our kilns before offering the finished, raw wood slabs to you.
