The mass and weight of these huge slabs of wood make them a good option for regional buyers who love Appalachian forests and can pick up the slabs at our shop.

Shipping LTL can cost more than the slab itself. Knowing this, we can provide shipping quotes when requested.

Wood Figure in Appalachian Species

These trees speak through the grain of their wood. Technical terminology for characteristics such as Curly, Spalted, Quilted, Wormy, and Burly are simple labels for extremely complex growth and figure resulting from a myriad of stresses and injuries that the tree has endured.  This figure can be difficult to see in a rough board for the untrained eye, but once our raw wood slabs have been finished you will be captivated by the depth and movement as the grain tells the story of its life.

Our sawing technique called “slabbing” means that once we choose the direction to slice, we make repeated parallel cuts until all boards are freed. We don’t cut the bark edges off as to leave the natural “live edge” intact. After a period of air drying to relieve the boards of excess moisture, we finish dry and sterilize them in our kilns before offering the finished, raw wood slabs to you.
