Welcome to our Green link.  At Highland Craftsmen Inc, “Green” involves sustainable whole systems planning and implementation on any given project or product.  Sustainable whole systems integrate three elements: environment, society / culture and economy.  Highland Craftsmen Inc outcomes will reflect this philosophy.

Bark House brand products are designed using these sustainable principles.  Our premiere product, Bark House brand shingles, for example are all natural, reclaimed and procured from sustainably designated forests within a 100-mile radius form the manufacturing facility. They are maintenance free so there are no chemical paints, stains or sealers added for the life of the product. They use no water in the manufacturing and very little grid energy that is off-set with renewable energy credits. Plus they are tough, resisting damage. At the end of their long life (around 80 years), the nails that affix them can be pulled, and the shingles are 100% biodegradable. Highland Craftsmen Inc has been manufacturing this product for 20 years and has created a new industry to better utilize forest products and add new jobs in an economically challenged area.

But don’t take our word for it. An anonymous group of 20 scientists with the NC Board of Science and Technology reviews applicants for the NC Green Innovation Award. It is an arduous process. Highland Craftsmen Inc received recognition from the board for their Green Building Innovations in Sustainability, specifically a class on product procurement.  For the company, this affirmed that green building technologies is not just a thing of the future, but a reality of today.

Bark House exterior shingle siding is Cradle to Cradle CertifiedCM at the Gold Level for their material content, recyclability and manufacturing characteristics. Highland Craftsmen Inc is a certified B Corp. Both product and company are ahead of their time.
