Ben's Cabin

Sally Friedman purchased Ben Cohen's Cabin (of Ben and Jerry's) that was located adjacent to her home and "reimagined the handmade home in paradox". She refurbished the cabin and created a whimsical retreat. "The back porch is perched over a waterfall and has a birch tree growing through it. The windows are salvaged and mismatched. Because the cabin sits on a rock outcropping with the ground falling away steeply on both sides, it feels like a tree house. "…The bark shingles reinforce the tree-house feeling. I want it to be difficult to see the cabin through the trees, to be caught by surprise, to approach it with a sense of wonder."  (Sally wrote for a 2016 Adirondack Life article). bens-cabin-bark-house-exterior-shingles

20th Annual Strong, Smart, and Bold Celebration Frolic on the Green The fundraiser was coordinated by Girls Incorporated, which gives girls the right tools and support to succeed, including trained professionals who mentor and guide them in a safe, girls-only environment, peers who share their same drive and aspirations, and research-based programming. Girls learn to set and achieve goals, boldly confront challenges, resist peer pressure, see college as attainable, and explore nontraditional fields such as STEM.  The event also will celebrate Houston-area women and businesses who reflect the mission of Girls Inc. of Greater Houston to inspire all girls to be strong, smart, and bold.   Proceeds from the Frolic on the Green will directly benefit the programs of Girls Inc. of Greater Houston which provide girls ages 6 – 18 with education and training in math and science, health and wellness, economic literacy, leadership, and avoiding risky behaviors. Striving to create a world free of stereotypes that impede girls’ progress, Girls Inc. provides area schools with much needed support and guidance.  Girls Inc. made $140,000 total at the fundraiser. Note: Using bark shingles as a roofing material is whimsical and fun, but not an approved application for endurance. bark-house-poplar-shingles-girls-inc-fundraiser-2016-04 [post_title] => Ben and Jerry's / Playhouse [post_excerpt] => [post_status] => publish [comment_status] => closed [ping_status] => open [post_password] => [post_name] => at-play-w-exterior-shingles [to_ping] => [pinged] => https://barkhouse.com/news/ [post_modified] => 2017-01-03 13:49:21 [post_modified_gmt] => 2017-01-03 18:49:21 [post_content_filtered] => [post_parent] => 0 [guid] => https://barkhouse.wpengine.com/?p=10391 [menu_order] => 0 [post_type] => post [post_mime_type] => [comment_count] => 0 [filter] => raw )

What 8th Graders Know

At the end of September, The Bark House participated in a river sweep with the Toe River Valley Coalition and Mrs. Sirois 8th grade Science class.     Some of the things that the students discovered were: Whoever made kayaking “a thing” was pretty smart. “This” does not belong in the river. I got … Continued

Hiking the John Muir Trail

Three years ago, Marty asked me, “So, what’s your next big adventure?”  I told him that I had been dreaming of hiking the entire John Muir Trail.  His quick response was, “have fun.”  I then explained to him that it wouldn’t be possible as I would have to be off from work for an entire … Continued
